Insurance Coverage

Personal injury protection, mainly car insurance, will sometimes cover massage therapy to help with recovery from an accident. Workers' compensation plans may also cover massage for on-the-job injuries. Your primary care provider will need to provide a prescription and prior authorization will need to be given by a claims representative.

Although most insurance plans do not cover massage therapy at this time, health care is changing rapidly. Stay abreast of your current coverage and monitor it frequently for changes. You may also want to express your preference for massage therapy coverage to your insurance company.

Affiliated Providers

Physicians Plus HMO members as a part of the Plus Perks Program are entitled to receive the lowest possible price for a massage session without having to purchase a package of sessions. For example, a person receiving a 1 hour session
would normally pay $70.00. The Plus Perks member pays only the package rate of $65.00 for that single purchase. Please be prepared to show your Physicians Plus Member I.D. card to receive your discount.

The UW Medical Foundation has the identical arrangement as the Physicians Plus HMO, except that this benefit is extended to employees of the UW Medical Foundation.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

Clients are encouraged to contact their employers concerning whether they provide a FSA program. An employee sets aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses not covered by insurance. Massage therapy is often a covered service.

A referral from your primary care provider may be necessary. Payment is due at the time services are provided. The client, in turn, submits the bills for reimbursement from the FSA.
